The Open-Source Community

Enabling an Open collaborative environment that allows developers and innovators in Africa to contribute to code and inputs while generating income from wherever they are

Why It Matters

Open Source at the Heart of Africa’s Innovation

In the world of digital innovation, the development and use of open-source tools is what has enabled all the technology experiences and opportunities around us. Open-source hardware and software are a cornerstone of innovation because they provide unrestricted access to source code, allowing individuals, academia, and industry to use, modify, and distribute technology freely. This openness accelerates collaborative problem-solving, reduces development costs, and breaks down barriers to entry for startups and researchers, fostering a vibrant ecosystem where new ideas and applications can rapidly emerge.

At Wireless Planet (and in collaboration with other partners), we are keen to enable opportunity for brilliant African minds to contribute to open-source innovations from the comfort of their homes/communities while earning money. Our Open initiatives are to enable public contributions in ways of funding as well as in ways of code and ideas (while earning some income from the funding).

The Initiative

Building an Open-Source Community for Africa

The Open-Source Community brings together developers, hardware makers, researchers, students, and partners who want to create and share practical tools for inclusive connectivity. Our focus is on open resources that support real deployments — sensors and gateways, network tooling, documentation, prototypes, and reusable components that make community networks and IoT projects easier to launch and sustain.

Through this initiative, Wireless Planet aims to:

  • Publish and maintain open tools, firmware references, and hardware-friendly designs for connectivity and IoT work.
  • Encourage knowledge exchange across Digital Hubs, universities, and maker groups so lessons from the field are not lost.
  • Lower barriers for entrepreneurs and community innovators who need affordable, adaptable technology stacks.
  • Align open collaboration with related Wireless Planet programmes — including the LoRaWAN Community, Digital Hubs, and research on access technologies.

Whether you are documenting a deployment, contributing code, sharing a hardware pattern, or mentoring others, you help grow a commons that strengthens digital inclusion across Kenya and the continent.
