Focus Areas
Connectivity and RF Spectrum Innovation
Advancing wireless access models, spectrum use, and last-mile networks for underserved communities.
Wireless Planet (WP) emerged as a strategic response to the findings of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) “Connect2Recover” initiative, specifically the project Rebuilding Digital Inclusion for Rural Counties of Kenya. This foundational study revealed significant connectivity challenges facing rural academic and healthcare institutions before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing these persistent gaps, Wireless Planet was launched to provide continuous assessment and advancement of meaningful Internet access for rural communities and institutions.
Wireless Planet’s mission centres on continuous evaluation of access technologies, the innovative use of radio frequency (RF) spectrum, and the exploration of alternative solutions to deliver affordable and reliable connectivity. Wireless Planet not only identifies technological gaps but also critically reviews existing policies and regulations, offering evidence-based recommendations and contributing to the development of practical models for expanding access to the unserved and underserved.
At its core, Wireless Planet is committed to demonstrating how context-appropriate connectivity solutions can unlock opportunities—enabling rural citizens to benefit from academic resources, quality healthcare, e-government services, and digital innovation. WP’s approach is grounded in practical research and innovation, as reflected in the publications of its founder, Leonard Mabele (ORCID profile), and is dedicated to fostering digital inclusion and spectrum innovation for the benefit of all Kenyans and by a great extent, across Africa.
