At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we also led studies on the mechanisms that can be adopted to build back better the desired resilience for rural access in Kenya. As part of a Connec2Recover project funded by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), our work focused on assessing ways that can enhance Kenya’s rural digital infrastructure. We therefore began by evaluating the challenges rural healthcare and academic facilities faced during the pandemic, explored the opportunity regulatory frameworks enacted at the time could support rural access efforts and the opportunity that spectrum sharing could provide.
Our studies identified challenges of dark fibre, underutilisation of the RF spectrum and the challenges of power that needed addressing in establishing resilient rural infrastructure. Our recommendations have therefore been published in various documents which include ITU’s publication, Huawei blog post and in a research paper.
